- The role of the department is to facilitate effective communication with the internal and external customers that the hospital serves. To this end, the department coordinates a Speakers Bureau, which provides the community with lecturers on health care topics, and offers health screening/prevention activities.
Through collaboration with clinical departments, Public Relations assist in the development of patient language pathway booklets. Educational offerings are prioritized on the needs of the community and on the hospital's prevalent admitting diagnoses, such as heart disease and cancer. The department also oversees hospital website administration and all marketing and media activities, including the publication of internal and external newsletters and advertising.
Areas that should be considered for medical staff participation include, but are not limited to:
WCBM Radio (Talk Show Host)
Medical Matters (physician newsletter input)
Health Fairs/Screenings - throughout the year, a multitude of events are held throughout the community that physicians may participate in.
Any new techniques, etc. that are newsworthy should be communicated to the Public Relations Dept for publicity consideration. For additional information please contact the Public Relations Department at (410)787-4367

- With changes in the health care delivery system, Baltimore Washington Medical Center understands that it is taxing to the primary care physician to provide efficient medical care to inpatients while practicing in a busy outpatient office. Many physicians have patients admitted to more than one hospital, in addition to numerous chronic care facilities, further attenuating their abilities to cover inpatients.
With this understanding, Baltimore Washington Medical Center renewed their commitment to improve the efficiency of inpatient care, as well as patient satisfaction, by supporting the development of the hospital based "Inpatient Team". The goal of the Inpatient Team is to provide high quality, efficient care for patients requiring hospitalization.
Program Overview
The program allows Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) to subscribe to the Inpatient Team to manage all of their patients while admitted to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The Team is comprised of three internal medicine physicians and two critical care certified Nurse Practitioners who care only for hospitalized patients. A n up to date roster of the subscribing PCPs can be accessed by the Team physicians as well as the Emergency Department via Baltimore Washington Medical Centerl's intranet service.
The team providers dictate admission history and physicals, inpatient consultations, as well as discharge summaries. Baltimore Washington Medical Center has an autofax feature, which allows for all dictations to be faxed to the PCP at time of transcription. A physician does not have to be on staff at BWMC to receive reports via autofax.
Not only does the team coordinate care after discharge by faxing the discharge summary to the PCP, they also give patients discharge instructions regarding medications, diet, activity, follow up timeframes and phone numbers. Telephone contact between the Team providers and the PCP is highly encouraged and straightforward to initiate. Team also creates transfer summaries when patient is being transferred to an alternative care facility.

The Pediatric Hospitalist program was established at Baltimore Washington Medical Center to provide the highest quality healthcare to children who are hospitalized. The program is comprised of board-certified pediatricians which are University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty. The Hospitalists oversee the care of patients in the Pediatric unit with approval from the child's regular pediatrician or family physician, and will coordinate care with the child's regular doctor to allow for treatment based on each patient's individual medical history. The Pediatricians provide coverage in the hospital 24 hours a day and see patients up to age 18 in the Emergency Department. As part of the teaching mission, the Pediatricians currently teach third year medical students, and a family medicine resident physician as well.

- Effective June, 2003, the Library will relocate, to include a change in the scope of services provided. The new location will be the back left section of the coding/chart completion side of the Health Information Management Department. Because this area houses confidential medical records and because of space constraints, only physicians will have access to this area. The library will have one year of journals stored on site, and as many textbooks as possible.
A new web site MDConsult will provide up to 20 physicians concurrently with extensive texts and journals through a web address. Access to this web site can be through any PC at BWMC, however, there will be a terminal in the library section of the HIM department. As such, additional texts and journals will no longer be purchased if they are part of the MDConsult collection. In 2004 an RNConsult address will be available for nursing associates. To access MDConsult go to www.mdconsult.com and type in username: NARUNDEL-1 and password: lowboy. Note that this is case sensitive. The BWMC Health Sciences Library is a member of the Medical Library Association, (MLA) an international association of Medical and Hospital Librarians
