The practice of perioperative nursing at Baltimore Washington Medical Center is fast paced, collaborative, and challenging. Professional nursing practice blends with the latest in science and technology including use of the DaVinci Robot, a state of the art endovascular suite and brain lab technology. New techniques, new equipment, and experienced professional nursing and surgical staff are hallmarks of Baltimore Washington Medical Center. RN's at Baltimore Washington practice in large modern surgical suites that are designed to provide the nurse with efficiency in motion and ease of care delivery. Twelve major operating rooms are usually to full capacity, as well as a local room. Staffing is provided for both the evening and night shift; thus, no weeknight evening or night call is required. RN call for the weekend is limited due to a dedicated RN weekend staff. A complete case cart system complements care delivery with Central Services staff, who are located adjacent to the operating room and committed to meeting the needs of the surgical staff.  Newly employed registered nurses are provided with a unique, individualized orientation process designed to meet the special needs of each nurse.

The OR at Baltimore Washington Medical Center offers a variety of employment opportunities in the surgical area. Operating Room Assistants assist with room turnover, gather equipment for cases, obtain patients for surgical procedures and work as surgical nursing assistants in the operating room. Surgical Technicians assist surgeons by providing correct instrumentation for cases. Baltimore Washington Medical Center provides incentives for those surgical technicians who wish to participate in a clinical ladder program that will reward surgical technicians for advanced technical knowledge and skill.

The roles of the OR nurse at Baltimore Washington are varied and exciting. BWMC is one of the visionary hospitals that utilize the evolving role of the Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA). RNFA's are experienced, certified OR nurses who have received extensive didactic and practical experience in the surgical setting and are trained to assist the surgeon in handling tissue, providing exposure, and suturing the patient.
