Vascular Access Team

Baltimore Washington Medical Center's Vascula Access Team provides 24/7 coverage for the inpatient and outpatient population with IV needs. IV Therapy RN's serve as important resources to staff RN's in critical care, acute care, and the Emergency Department, and are consulted for choosing, inserting and managing the most appropriate IV device to meet patient needs. The Vascular Access Team is the first resource for PICC line insertion. We are highly respected for our skills and decision making in solving patient care problems related to the Vascualr Access Team. The Vascular Access Team provides outpatient services to meet patients needs for ongoing long term IV access and treatment. We teach patients/families how to care for their IV devices and make it possible for them to resume their normal activities while they are receiving ongoing treatment.

The Vascular Access Team has been involved in choosing new technologies and supplies. We've written new procedure, protocols, and competencies to keep up with advances in technologies and medications, including protocols for catheter clearance.

We collaborate with staff RN's, case managers, physicians, pharmacists, radiology staff, and infection control to provide effective quality IV care to our patients. IV Therapy RN's have the opportunity and autonomy to use all of their nursing skills for problem solving and critical thinking to meet patients needs.
