General Surgery
A general surgeon is trained to diagnose, treat and manage patients with a
range of surgical conditions affecting almost any area of the body. General
surgeons provide preoperative, operative and postoperative care to patients
with conditions related to the head and neck, breast, skin and soft tissues,
abdomen, extremities and the gastrointestinal, vascular, and endocrine systems.
Conditions treated include:
- Abdominal trauma
- Appendicitis
- Gall bladder inflammation and stones
- Hemorrhoids
- Inguinal hernia
- Tumors of the intestines, colon and breast
Common procedures general surgeons use to treat the conditions listed above
include:
- Breast lumpectomy – Also known as breast-conserving
surgery. Surgery to remove cancerous area and a surrounding margin of normal
tissue.
- Colonoscopy – Outpatient procedure to examine the
colon and rectum from the inside.
- Laparoscopy – Examination of the abdominal or female
pelvic organs with a thin lighted tube. The procedure requires a small incision
in the abdominal wall.
- Hemorrhoidectomy – Surgery to remove hemorrhoids.
- Mastectomy – Surgery to remove a breast.
